After Buzz, Google to discontinue seven more products

NEW YORK: Internet search titan Google plans to discontinue seven more products, including 'Wave', in a bid to simplify its services further after bringing down the curtains on its 'Buzz' social networking, microblogging and messaging tool.

The off-season "spring cleaning" would mark the end of various Google services such as Wave, Knol, Gears, Bookmarks Lists, Friend Connect and Search Timeline, Google Senior Vice-President (Operations) Urs Holzle said in a blogpost.

In addition, Google said it will also shelve its 'renewable energy-cheaper-than-coal (RE
This is the third time that Google has announced a whittling down of its products slate after they failed to generate interest among users.

Google said some of the services will stop working from next month and by next year, most of the products will be shut down completely.

"To recap, we're in the process of shutting a number of products which haven't had the impact we'd hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts and ending several which have shown us a different path forward. Overall, our aim is to build a simpler, more intuitive, truly beautiful Google user experience," Holzle added.

The US-based firm said Google Wave -- which was an attempt to combine email and instant messaging for real-time collaboration -- will turn off completely from April 30, 2012. In addition, Google Friends Connect service -- which allowed webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding a snippet of code -- would be retired from March 1, 2012.

Jayalaithaa opposes FDI in retail

CHENNAI: Flaying the Centre's decision to allow FDI in retail, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa today alleged it was taken under pressure from a few retail giants and asserted her government would not allow multi-brand global players to set up their markets in the state.

Strongly opposing the decision to open up retail trade to FDI, Jayalalithaa demanded that the Congress-led UPA government reverse the 'ill-advised' move as it would not serve to bring down inflation or improve market efficiency.

Rather, the domestic manufacturing and services sector would take a serious hit and the retail trade completely taken over by the MNC dominated big retail giants which is not good for the country, she said in a strongly-worded statement.

"While Parliament is in session, this move of the Government of India..without even consulting the state governments is unprecedented and indicates the overweening arrogance of the UPA goverment," she said.

The FDI policy in the retail sector was a "sensitive issue and by making this sudden announcement ignoring the sentiments of the people, the Central government has stirred the "proverbial Hornet's Nest," she said.

Jayalalithaa described the Centre's move as a "wrong decision, Read more

Yahoo India launches free video service

NEW DELHI: Search engine giant Yahoo India launched a new video service that will provide users access to genuine content and offer advertisers a new revenue platform.

Yahoo! Video will provide original content across multiple genres such as news, entertainment, lifestyle and movies from 35 content producers which include NDTV, Star TV, Shemaroo, Headlines Today, PVR Pictures and Ultra.

"Online video consumption is growing at a rapid pace. However, a large portion of this is user generated content, which is often a rip-off of content. So, a lot of the content available is illegal and pirated," Yahoo! India Managing Director Arun Tadanki told reporters here.

"What we will offer is a safe and piracy-free destination delivering high quality and strictly original content," he added.

According to a recent ComScore report, over 30 million unique users in India watch online videos every month and on an average, each user watches about 58 videos a month.

Yahoo!'s biggest competitor in the segment would be Youtube, which features user-generated content.

"What we offer users is a clutter-free viewing experience. So, when they access Yahoo! Videos, they can be sure they get the genuine video they are looking for. Also, since users will not be allowed to rip videos from the sites, all copyrights are protected," Tadanki said.

The move follows Yahoo India's launch of Movieplex, which provides users licensed full-length movies for free.

Users will have access to videos in seven languages including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and Tamil.

Driven by advertisements, Yahoo! Videos will work on a revenue sharing model, Tadanki said.

"Early diagnosis has shown that Yahoo! does not cannibalise our business - it provides an additional audience and a new video

iPhone 4S priced at Rs.44,500 in India

New Delhi, Nov 21 (TruthDive): The launch price of iPhone in India is Rs.44,500 and evidently, it will be much more costlier in India than the rest of the world.
Aircel and Bharti Airtel have officially announced that they will be launching the iPhone 4S in India. In addition, they have also announced the prices, which are substantially higher than the last generation iPhone 4. Aircel and Bharti Airtel have priced the 16GB variant at INR 44,500, and the 32GB variant at INR 50,900.
In fact, all Apple products are priced significantly higher in India than in US, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Yet, Indian customers will not benefit from getting somebody to buy the phone for them from US or Singapore. That is because, unlike the iPad and Apple’s range of personal computers, the iPhone does not come with an international warranty. The warranty for iPhone 4S will be valid only in the country in which the phone is purchased.
Experts say, such a price difference will lead to the resurgence of the gray market that had largely disappeared in India due to the pricing parity followed by all handset majors and the near total abolition of customs and import duties by the government in a phased manner over the past few years.
Executives from both Airtel and Aircel, local carriers that will launch iPhone 4S on their networks, declined to comment.
However, the situation holds no novelty for Apple or Indian users, for that matter. Starting from iPods, Apple products have always been priced considerably higher in India as compared to other nations like Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States.
While expressing his opinion in this regard, an industry executive, who has long been eventful in monitoring response of Indian users for such Read more

Nun murder case: Police protecting real killers [Sister Valsa John buried]

Ranchi: Seven days have passed since Sister Valsa Jhon, a Nun from Kerala who was part of a group campaigning against the coal mafia, was gunned down by a group of unidentified men in Pakur, Jharkhand. Though the police on Monday arrested seven suspects, but they are still not sure if it's the mafia or local villagers who are behind the murder.

"The villagers were unhappy that she was about to expose them in a rape case," said Arun Kumar Oraon, IG, Santhal Pargana, Jharkhand.

Valsa's supporters aren't for the moment buying the police's explanation. They believe it's a much larger conspiracy involving the highly influential coal mafia hand in glove with the police.

"We had gone their after she was killed. The police is threatening us. I am sure this is the work of the coal mafia," said Gopi Ghosh, a supporter of Sister Valsa.

Valsa killing created a ripple in the coal belt and strong protests followed for nabbing those responsible. The immediate needle of suspicion was pointed towards the coal mafias and big coal companies, whose business interests got hampered time to time by Valsa's agitation.

"There should be a CBI enquiry," said Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahai.

By suggesting the villagers killed Valsa because she was about to expose them in a rape case, the police it seems have pointedly refused to explore other possibilities. Read more

India witnesses 56% drop in new HIV cases: UNAIDS

GENEVA: India, which has one of the highest populations of HIV-infected people in Asia, has witnessed a decline in new infections by a significant 56% from the epidemic's peak in 1996, with other Asian countries also showing a plunge.

According to the UNAIDS World Aids Day report 2011, the number of new HIV infections has been falling significantly in Asia, with India leading the pack.

It said new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have fallen by 21% from the peak of the epidemic around world.

The number of people dying of AIDS-related causes fell to 1.8 million in 2010, down from a peak of 2.2 million in the mid-2000s, while a total of 2.5 million deaths have been averted in low- and middle-income countries since 1995 due to antiretroviral therapy being introduced.

"In South and South-East Asia, the estimated 270,000 new HIV infections in 2010 was 40 per cent less than at the epidemic's peak in 1996," said the report.

"In India, the country with the largest number of people living with HIV in the region, new HIV infections fell by 56 per cent," it added.

Releasing the report here, executive director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibe said the results are satisfactory, but stressed that shared responsibility is needed to combat the epidemic more effectively.

"Even in a very difficult financial crisis, countries are delivering results in the AIDS response. We have seen a massive scale up in access to HIV Read more

CBI raids Bharti Airtel, Vodafone offices

MUMBAI (Reuters) - The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday conducted searches at Vodafone's Indian unit and Bharti Airtel's offices seeking details on spectrum allocation by the government to operators between 2001-02.

The searches were in regard to possible irregularities in allotting spectrum during the previous government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), now in opposition, CBI's spokeswoman, Dharini Mishra told Reuters.

"All our documents are in complete compliance with the governing laws and regulations. Vodafone India is completely co-operating with the officials and will provide them all the required details as part of their checks," Vodafone said in a statement.
The CBI conducted raids at Vodafone's Mumbai and New Delhi offices and Bharti Airtel's office in Gurgaon, near New Delhi.
"We would like to categorically state that all the spectrum allotted to us from time to time has been strictly as per the stated government policy," Bharti Airtel's spokesman said in a statement.
"We are providing all details and correspondence to the authorities and shall provide complete support as needed in the matter," Bharti Airtel's spokesperson said.
Congress party-led government has been rocked by a series of corruption scandals that sparked massive street protests by anti-graft activists, sent prominent politicians to trial and undermined investor confidence in the Asian giant.

The biggest case involves the trial of business executives and the former telecoms minister, who is accused of taking bribes to favour some firms which wanted to buy mobile phone licences. The Comptroller and Auditor General of India(CAG) has said the under-selling of licences for kickbacks may have cost India $39 billion in revenue.
Saturday's searches could give the Congress party ammunition to fight back against the main opposition BJP's attacks against Read more

Australia, Seeking Tourists, Calls on Bollywood

SYDNEY — Indian TV actors Saakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor may not be as well-known as Oprah Winfrey, but the pair are set to follow in the footsteps of the U.S. chat-show queen in raising Australia’s profile as a tourist destination.

The stars of “Bade Acche Lagte Hain,” produced by Balaji Telefilms for Sony TV, will jet to Australia to shoot the latest episodes of the drama, which is watched by 42 million Indians. The plot involves the couple taking their honeymoon in Sydney, a decision that Australian officials hope will trigger a wave of other lovestruck Indians traveling Down Under.

“This provides us with an opportunity to showcase the best of Sydney and surrounds as a honeymoon destination,” says George Souris, New South Wales state’s minister for tourism and major events. In the year ending June 30, India ranked as New South Wales’s 11th biggest market in terms of visitor numbers, worth 826 million Australian dollars (US$885 million) in total expenditure to Australia.

But this has the potential to take off rapidly through better marketing, officials say. Tourism Australia estimates that Indian visitors have the potential to spend up to A$2.25 billion by 2020. India Real Time has more. Read more

The birthday of Lord Krishna [Orissa Famous Festival - Janmastami]

The birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is celebrated as Janmastami. It falls on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of 'Bhadraba' or 'Bhadra'. Of all the divine incarnations of the God, Sri Krishna is the most adored. By virtue of His divine 'Leelas' or sports, Krishna has take place the darling of the humanity. The reason of taking this avatar or incarnation was, as explained in the 'Bhagavat Geeta', the annihilation of evil and the establishment of truth and virtue.
As such, from His childhood beyond Krishna destroyed numerous demons (suggestive of evil forces) that were harassing the Gods and men alike.

Lord Krishnas birth heralds the hope for the destruction of the demon Kansa and so it becomes memorable as the eventual triumph of good over evil. Later on, as an ally of the 'Pandavas', He brought about in the attention of truth and justice, the war of 'Kurukshetra' to demolish the evil 'Kauravas' and restore legitimate rights to the honest and truthful Pandavas. It was from this battlefield that He delivered His Message to the suffering humanity. All His Leela have been elaborately explained in the Bhagavata Geeta, Mahabharata, Hari Janma and many other religious books.

Lord Krishna was born at mid-night when the moon entered the house of 'Vrisabha' at the constellation of the star 'Rohini' on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrab. Thus, it became customary to observe fasting up to mid-night till the exact hour of birth.

The festival is widely celebrated in all vaishnavite temples, monasteries and houses. Clay images of Krishna are also worshipped on this occasion. The festival is devoutly observed by the cowherd community of Orissa, as Krishna lived and spent his childhood days in Gopa. The next day is observed as 'Nandotshaba' by this particular community as reminiscence of the festival that was held by Nanda Raja, to celebrate the birth and arrival of Krishna.

The general pooja process begins early in the morning with devotees giving a bath or abhishek to Bal Gopal's idol with gangajal, ghee, water, honey and curd. The idol is then adorned with new clothes (preferably in yellow colour), stone or other precious jewellery.

After that, the idol of lord is offered bhog, the contents of bhog may vary. Fruits, kheer, pedha, milk, and milk products are made. There are devotees who offer chappan bhog(56 dishes) to Bal Gopal. Thereafter, special Krishna pooja is performed. The cradle containing the divine infant's idol is rocked, conch is blown. Devotees sing Krishna arti, some people read out 108 names of lord. They get totally immersed in the name and praise of Gopal. After the entire pooja is over, devotees break their fast by having panchamrit.

There are certain special items required for Krishnashtami pooja. Read more

Sony launches the Tablet S in India at Rs 29,990

New Delhi: About month-and-a-half after it was first unveiled Sony launched its tablet device, the Sony Tablet S, in the Indian market. The Tablet S is the one of the first two tablet devices from the Japanese electronics giant.
Sony has added some additional features to its tablet devices in an effort to set them apart from the herd of iPad competitors. The Tablet S, which is about the size of an iPad, can double as a universal remote control. The tablet is wedge-shaped, with one side thicker than the other. The shape mimics that of a magazine that's been folded over.
The tablet ties into other Sony properties. For instance, the Tablet S is able to run games created for the original PlayStation and the PlayStation Portable and includes apps that connect to Sony's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited content stores, formerly known as Qriocity.

The Android 3.2 powered device has a 9.4-inch (WXGA 1280x800) screen, 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Tablet S has a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front camera. Sony India has not listed the 32GB version on its website. The Sony Tablet S is priced at Rs 29,990.
Sony is already late to the tablet game with its first tablet that launched more than a year and a half after Apple launched the iPad and almost a year since Samsung came out with the GalaxyTab.
Tech reviewers credited Sony for coming up with a unique curvy design for the S tablet, which resembles a folded-back magazine and makes it easier to hold with one hand, but the quality of the hardware was questioned.
Once a symbol of Japan's high-tech might, Sony is struggling under the weight of its money-losing TV division and badly needs the boost of a hit product. Read more
