Draw inspiration from Guru Nanak's message: Obama

WASHINGTON: Sending best wishes to the Sikh community on the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, US President Barack Obama today said that people can draw inspiration from his message of equality, honesty and helping those in need.

"As Sikhs across America and around the world celebrate the life of Guru Nanak, all of us can draw inspiration from his message of equality, honesty, and helping those who are in need," Obama said in a statement.

"I send my best wishes to all those observing the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru," he said.

"On this occasion, we are reminded of the fundamental principles of Sikhism, including the equality of all people, the sanctity of living an honest life, and the importance of service to our neighbours," Obama said.

"I'm proud that during my presidency the White House hosted the first celebration of the birth of Guru Nanak, and our country is grateful for the extraordinary contributions that Sikh Americans have made to our nation," said the US President. Read more

Manmohan calls Pakistani PM Gilani a 'man of peace

Saarc summit: Manmohan calls Pakistani PM Gilani a 'man of peace', BJP says it's ridiculous

NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan on Thursday talked about writing "a new chapter" in their accident-prone ties, with Islamabad assuring New Delhi that the terrorists behind the Mumbai carnage, that virtually froze relations between the neighbours, will be brought to justice soon.

Meeting on the sidelines of the 17th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit here, the two leaders held delegation-level talks for around half an hour in a seaside beach cottage at the idyllic Shangri La resort hotel and followed it up with nearly 45 minutes of one-on-one talks.

With relations having languished since the cataclysmic 26/11 terror attacks nearly three years ago, the two sided agreed to push a host of initiatives, including the revival of the joint commission, a preferential trade agreement and liberal visa regime.

India conveyed to Pakistan the imperative need to punish perpetrators of 26/11 carnage and underlined that terror should not be allowed to spoil improving relations between them.

Pakistan promised to conclude the trial of the Mumbai terror accused in its custody and declared that Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving 26/11 terrorist, should be hanged.

In a sign of the new spirit of mutual accommodation, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani agreed to open a new chapter in ties and hoped the next round of talks will be "more productive and constructive." Read more

Mahindra Satyam's merger with Tech Mahindra next year

HYDERABAD: Mahindra Satyam's merger with parent firm Tech Mahindra will take place next year, its chairman Vineet Nayyar said Thursday.

"It is a process. We are looking at it when to commence it and we are hoping that by the next year, some time in later half of the year, this amalgamation will in fact take place," he told reporters while declaring Q2 results of Mahindra Satyam.

Nayyar recalled that after winning the bid for the company in April 2009, Tech Mahindra had indicated its intention to merge. "That intention remains," he said.

In May this year, he hinted that the merger may be delayed as it is a legal process which has to go to two high courts.

Tech Mahindra had acquired Satyam Computer Services Limited in April 2009, a few months after Satyam was rattled by India's biggest corporate fraud. Satyam was subsequently re-named Mahindra Satyam.

To another query, Nayyar said the firm had resolved almost all cases in the US, which arose because of the fraud committed by the earlier management.

The company has already paid $10 million to settle the US Securities and Exchange Commission's suit over the fraud. It paid $125 million to settle class action suits and another $70 million to settle the Upaid case.

On the Income Tax department's notice to pay Rs.616 crore tax, Mahindra Satyam ceo CP Gurnani said the demand on fictitious income was unreasonable. "That is the reason we have choosen to go to court and are seeking justice," he said.

The Mahindra Group company had earlier said that on the one hand, the government agencies were prosecuting former Satyam chief B. Ramalinga Raju Read more
